What are Superfoods?

  • Superfoods (called functional foods by the European Commission) refer to non-medical terms but still they improve physical and emotional health.
  • Superfoods are not pills, capsules or any form of dietary complements.
  • They are natural food patterns/ailments which have an unusually high content of health beneficial properties: antioxidants, vitamins, fibres or other nutrients.
  • Super Foods are foods with natural values like berries, nuts and seeds in general, dark green vegetables (such as kale, collard greens, Swiss chard, Brussels sprouts and broccoli), citrus fruits, fatty fish such as salmon, mackerel and sardines, vegetables with bright, dark or intense colors (such as beets and their greens, and sweet potatoes), certain wild mushrooms, many legumes (peanuts, lentils, beans, raw cocoa), and whole grains as a group.

    • Legumes (prevent tumor),
    • Others (Apples, apricots, barley, citrus fruit, cranberries, fiber, figs, fish oil, fish, ginger, green tea, spinach and seaweed have the ability to slow tumor growth in various ways).

Some critical arguments – advice.

  • Health benefits and effects of foods described as Superfoods are often disputed or unsupported by scientific studies.
  • Ex: raw cocoa has positive effects on blood pressure and markers of heart health, while other research indicated less certainty about the possible effects of cocoa on cardiovascular disease.
  • It is important to mix Super Foods and do not abuse of one type of Superfoods (e.x: nuts) in order to avoid addiction or to impair a disease.
  • People must be careful about the real natural values of a Superfoods because it happens that brands promote health benefits just for the marketing strategy (e.x: green tea – weight loss is true but it has been well-known for years for high-quality teas)
